This course discusses various thoughts and theories about nationalism and the reasons behind
its development. Nationalism is a process that must be strived continuously. The implementing nationalism process is better known as nation-building. Meanwhile, if the process of nation-building is carried out properly, it will certainly determine the character of a nation. For this reason, the nation’s character is an important part to be put forward in this public lecture to see the dynamic process of nationalism’s journey.

The Integration Theory course provides students with specific abilities and skills to master the concepts and theories of sociology, anthropology, economics and politics related to the integration process of a society and/ or nation and state. For this reason, this course introduces the development of social science concepts and theories related to national integration. In addition, this course also provides students with an outline of the historical process of integration of the Indonesian nation and introduces them to the social science theories application to analyze the process of formation and nation integration, especially in the Indonesian nations.

The Historical Theory course contains various critical thoughts about the special provisions and or rules in the science of history that are needed for the process of historical reconstruction. The historical theory is a framework for organizing ways of thinking and guiding historians in understanding the past and compiling past events into critical analytical writing of history. The historical theory focuses on critical thinking to facilitate historical analysis and synthesis. Some historical thoughts include historical units, historical facts, historical objectivity, historical relativity, historical imagination, the relationship between the present and the past.

The substance of the Historical Research Methodology course includes science and scientific research, historical research, the relationship between history and other social sciences, historical methods, historical explanations, and writing research results.

This course discusses the history or development of general history writing, which in this case is Western Historiography. Presentation is in line with the periodization of western history, namely Classical (Greek and Roman) historiography, Medieval historiography, Renaissance Age, Modern Western historiography, and American historiography. Each era will discuss the culture behind it, especially the development of historiography as part of the culture. In addition, Islamic Historiography will also be discussed, namely historians and historiographical works and schools that appear in every era.

Maritime History

The Maritime History course examines the development of major maritime activities, such as shipping, trade, ports, marine and coastal communities, and the tradition of maritime, piracy, and shipping. In addition, this course also provides students with skills in maritime history research theory and methodology.

Since prehistoric times, long before land and air transportation developed, the sea was a means of transportation and communication for various peoples in the world. In addition, the sea is also a vehicle that forms various communities through assimilation and acculturation which is the basis of human development in the world. Sea contains dynamics that create unity relations between people and between nations through transportation, trade, and cultural encounters. Given the importance of the function of the sea in the history of the development of human civilization, it is necessary to develop theories and methodologies in maritime historical and cultural research.

This course aims to equip students of the Master’s Program in History with the skills and abilities to read Dutch historical sources. In this course, students are trained to read Indonesian historical texts in Dutch with an emphasis on the ability to analyze sentences according to Dutch grammatical guidelines and they can understand the contents of the text correctly. Historical texts are taken from various library materials related to Indonesian history. Thus, students are also prepared to be able to be critical of foreign works on Indonesian history written in Dutch.

This course aims to equip students of the Master of History Program to be able to translate modern (20th century) Dutch texts into good Indonesian. Therefore, the reading materials given in lectures are historical writings published in the 20th century. In the learning process sequentially by reading the text, looking for the meaning of words and collocations, understanding the grammar of the text, as well as making summaries and translations of the contents of the text.

This course discusses concepts, theories, and practices of government, especially governance in Indonesia, in both processual and structural dimensions. The processual study includes a chronology of governance practices in Indonesia from the beginning of independence to the reformation period. Structural studies cover various kinds of social, political, economic, and cultural backgrounds as well as their relation to the development of Indonesia’s foreign relations which also determine various changes in the practice of the government system in Indonesia.
